The Old Mill
Overview
The old mill in Somerset is nestled amidst the greenery of a golf course. To bring it up to date for twenty-first century living, a design response that would preserve the original mill’s features while making it functional for family use was required. The building holds local significance, and the site’s access is limited by winding country roads. Historic photos revealed that over the years, extensions, adaptations, and renovations had diluted the building’s original heritage.
The goal was to modernise it by externally applying contemporary materials and increasing glazed features. To enhance the views and open the rear of the property, a rear extension and glazed rear façade were added, driven by the connection to the lake and water feature. The functionality of the open-plan living area was increased by adding rear dormers and front extensions. The new extensions were clad in timber, a sustainable material that blends in with the surrounding countryside. The internal lining of the external stone walls and the addition of new roof insulation and linings improved the home’s comfort and efficiency.
