Master Planning the Future

By L+ Architects and L+ Living

At L+ Architects, we specialise in master planning, urban design, and landscape architecture, creating places that are grounded in nature, responsive to context, and built for longevity. Our work spans the UK and international markets, with a particular focus on mixed-use developments, heritage masterplans, and schemes that reconnect people with place.

In a country as small and as beautiful as Britain, where land is finite and deeply layered with history, our responsibility as designers is not just to meet demand, but to leave a legacy. The developments of today shape the communities of tomorrow. Master planning is how we do this with vision, clarity, and care.

Urban Planning vs Master Planning

Urban planning and master planning are often conflated, but they are distinct disciplines. Urban planning provides the strategic and policy framework – guiding zoning, infrastructure, and long-term land use. Master planning transforms those frameworks into real places: determining how streets are framed, how people move and meet, how landscapes breathe, and how built form enhances rather than erases character.

At L+ Architects, we are experts at making that transition. We bring deep experience across scales and sectors, from urban regeneration to heritage integration, and always with a lens on beauty, biodiversity, and belonging.

Biophilic Design at the Core

We design with nature at heart. Biophilic design, the principle that humans thrive in natural environments, is embedded in every scheme. From green corridors and rain gardens to sunlit courtyards and living walls, we design places that support physical wellbeing, mental health, and long-term value.

This is not simply aesthetic. Studies by the University of Exeter and Terrapin Bright Green show that biophilic design reduces stress, improves cognitive function, and increases property desirability. At L+ Living, our in-house landscape and interiors team ensures the experience of every site is holistic, flowing seamlessly from exterior to interior, from public space to private sanctuary.

We draw on the Japanese concept of borrowed landscape (shakkei), framing long views and echoing local landforms. In a British context, where the countryside is among the most beautiful and storied in the world, we see this as both a privilege and an obligation.

Heritage-Led Masterplanning

We often work within historically sensitive settings, advising on Grade-listed estates, former industrial sites, and rural landscapes where new development must earn its place. Rather than dilute heritage, we work to reinterpret it, making sensitive additions that respect context while enabling innovation.

Whether it’s a barn conversion under Class Q or a full-scale masterplan adjoining a conservation area, we bring expertise in adaptive reuse, placemaking, and landscape-led master planning that responds to heritage constraints without resorting to pastiche. One of our greatest strengths is integrating architecture and landscape as one coherent language, ensuring that outdoor spaces, planting design and topography complement, rather than compete with, the historic setting.

“Understanding the language of architecture means listening carefully to what a building is already saying, its materials, proportions, and rhythm. Good design doesn’t mimic; it responds. When we work with heritage buildings, we don’t copy the past – we extend it, adding a quiet, confident layer of contemporary design that belongs to the 21st century without shouting over what came before. That includes the landscape, it’s not a backdrop but a vital part of the story.” — Pablo Lambrechts, Principal Architect, L+ Architects.

This sensitive, future-facing approach allows us to introduce 21st-century design quality into historic settings, while carefully choreographing the public realm, views, planting and landform. Our aim is to honour the past while ensuring these places evolve and thrive for generations to come.
