At L+ Architects, we believe great school design should be for every mind. As the parent of two neurodiverse children, I’ve seen firsthand how the built environment can either hinder or unlock a child’s potential. This insight has deeply shaped our approach to architecture for education.
While designing the Google HQ at King’s Cross, I saw the transformative effect that natural light, materials, and acoustics could have on wellbeing and productivity. We now bring these same biophilic principles to schools – with powerful results.
I previously led award-winning and inclusive school projects while working at leading international practices, including:
Now, as founder of L+ Architects, I bring that experience and knowledge into a dedicated, design-led studio focused on biophilic and neuro-inclusive environments. Our work spans full architectural services, masterplanning, and specialist landscape and acoustic design. All our school projects embed the core principles of PAS 6463:2022 – Design for the Mind, a British Standard focused on inclusive environments that reduce sensory overload.

Why Neuro-Inclusive Design Matters
Approximately 15–20% of the population is neurodiverse (Equality and Human Rights Commission, 2020), encompassing conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia. But the benefits of thoughtful, sensory-aware design extend far beyond this group. A calm, well-ventilated classroom with good daylight and acoustics helps every pupil learn better.
As research from EDspaces and Terrapin Bright Green shows, biophilic design can significantly reduce stress, increase concentration, and improve memory retention in children. Natural textures, controlled lighting, quiet spaces, and visual connection to greenery create learning environments that are both beautiful and functional.
We also align our designs with WELL Building Standard principles – incorporating strategies that support both physical and mental health. These include access to nature, movement, acoustic comfort, nutrition-supportive environments, and psychological safety. It’s a holistic approach that nurtures the whole student.
Placemaking for Young People
School is more than a place to learn – it’s a place to grow, socialise, and feel secure. Our placemaking approach creates sensory-rich, flexible environments with moments of calm and delight. We use landscape architecture to soften transitions, create outdoor classrooms, and anchor children to the rhythms of nature.
Every element – from the sweep of a handrail to the dappled shade of a tree – plays a part in helping students feel grounded and inspired.
Speed and Sustainability with Cross-Laminated Timber
For schools seeking low-disruption, high-impact solutions, we offer the option of designing with cross-laminated timber (CLT). CLT not only enhances the warmth and texture of natural wood, vital for sensory wellbeing, but is also precision-cut in factories and assembled on-site in just weeks. This dramatically reduces construction noise, disruption, and time on site, helping schools stay focused on education while transformation happens around them.
Our Design Principles for Schools
But just as vital is how a school looks and feels. Our signature style champions deceptively simple, flowing spaces that exemplify a contemporary architectural language — light-filled, elegant, and full of character. Our buildings aren’t just inclusive — they’re aspirational. They make people stop and look. They make young people proud to belong.
As we often say at L+ Architects, “Biophilic design isn’t a luxury. It’s essential for wellbeing and performance”.
If your school is considering a new building or a transformation of its existing spaces, we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re at the concept stage or simply curious, we’re always happy to share our insights.
Let’s design spaces where every mind can thrive beautifully.
